A week of walking works wonders
For many Australians the idea of walking holiday in the mountains is still foreign. They immediately have visions of sweat, toil, no chance to relax and no beach in sight. But the fact is, with average summer temperatures at around 22 degrees and low humidity, working up a sweat is not all that likely and, contrary to popular belief, a walking holiday is just about the best relaxation around. Imagine this for a week of walking in the high country: Day 1: Start off on a leg loosener with great mountain and river views along the relatively level loop track to Bullocks Hut on the pristine Thredbo River. (90 minutes.) Day 2: Either Walk down (or if you’re game) up the picturesque Merrits Nature Track and ride the chair the other way. (1-2 hours) Day 3: Ride the Chairlift again and follow the Dead Horse Gap loop back to Thredbo. (3 hours) enjoying spectacular scenery of the Ramsheads and Chimneys..or ...drive to Perisher Valley and take the Porcupine Rocks track for views of the Main Range and an eagles eye view of the Thredbo Valley. (2-3 hours.) Day 4: A rainy day? So what!. Take a walk along the Riverside Track for views of cascading water falls and then head a short way up the Nature track to see the Merrits Creek in full flow and veils of mist in the towering Alpine Ash forest above. (90 Minutes) Day 5: Go for the big one. Either a walk to Mt Kosciuszko with a picnic and a need to be at the top of Australia with views forever. (4 hours)... Or if you are feeling fit, you can tackle the Main Range Walk, taking in Rawson's Pass, 4 of the 5 glacial lakes and some of the best views in Australia from Mt Caruthers and Twynam. Although the walk finishes at Charlottes Pass, some intrepid walkers will head back to Thredbo on foot adding 12kms to the 19km trek. Most mortals however ....will either leave a car at Charlottes for the trip home or if the timing is right, join a Guided Main Range Walk from Thredbo and enjoy champagne and cheese at Charlottes Pass before boarding the Thredbo shuttle bus back home. The great news this year is that the Guided Main Range Walk will operate every Wednesday from November to April and more in School Holidays and Easter. Now having read this itinerary you may be wondering how a week of walking can possibly be relaxing? But think about this...every day you are getting exercise and fresh air which helps boost your “good nights sleep hormone”, melantonin. Even if you go for a walk every day, you’ll still have plenty of time for relaxing, reading, drinking cappuccinos and soaking up the priceless Thredbo sunset from your balcony before dinner out or an early night. So after a week of fresh air, relaxation, exercise, deep sleep and cappuccinos all in
moderation, in traffic light free Thredbo you can’t help but feel relaxed, rested and ready for more... and that is what a holiday is all about.... |
